Caring for your Poodle's Ears

By Jacki Panzik

A Dog's Ear Canal Is Different From Your Ear Canal

The human ear canal is a straight tunnel that leads to the eardrum. The K-9’s ear canal is L shaped and much deeper than a human’s ear canal. This means it takes a bit more effort to clean than does the human ear. Just like we do not penetrate our ears too deeply while cleaning, one should take care also while cleaning the ear of your K-9 friend’s ear.

Clearing And Cleaning The Ear Canal

First, pluck the hair from the ear canal. This can be aided by using “ear powder” that is specially designed to aid in the removal of ear hair, making the process less painful to the dog. The hair should be plucked using a good pair of straight hemostats grabbing one small bit of hair at a time so as not to pull too much with one grab, as that is very painful. After hair is removed and ear canal is clear, use the following natural ear cleaning solution:

  • 50% Filtered water
  • 25% Vodka or Everclear (grain alcohol)
  • 25% organic Cider Vinegar
  • 2 tbsp. Boric Acid to 16 oz. Water/Vinegar solution.

Be sure to shake this solution before each use, as the boric acid tends to settle to the bottom of the bottle.

Routine cleaning should be done with an organic cotton ball once a week. If your poodle's ears have a discharge, clean ears twice a day for 2 weeks then go to 1 time per day for 2 weeks, then to 3 times a week for 2 weeks, then twice a week on.

An alternative to this is using Colloidal Silver in the ears. You can even use Colloidal Silver in the eyes if they become teary or irritated.

Pour ear cleaner into the outer part of the ear canal, never shoot it into the canal directly. Then let the cleaner seep into the ear canal itself by massaging the ear so as to spread the cleaner through out the ear. You’ll hear the cleaner doing its work. Then swab out the outer canal with a cotton ball. Be gentle, even cotton can be abrasive if rubbed in too hard. Then lots of “good boys/girl”s to let your friend know that part is over and you are not going to be bothering them with that process the rest of the day. I have never met a dog that likes to have his or hers ears cleared and cleaned.

Some Very Important Rules

  1. Never use Peroxide to clean you dog’s ears. It can cause permanent damage because of the foaming action, your dog could suffer irreparable damage.
  2. If your dog shows symptoms of an infection, e.g. head shaking, ears sensitive to touch, constant scratching, smelly ears, get your dog to your Veterinarian. Ear problems are not to be underestimated. They can cause big trouble if left untreated.
  3. Recommended Products for the Elimination of Ear Problems:

    Gold Rush Liver Flush

    Prairie Powder

    Critter Corral

    Force Dog Food
