Greetings From PoodleTown!
We are so excited about spring at Admiration Ranch. Flowers blooming and green popping out all over. We are enjoying our beautiful facilities including the new outdoor play pens and covered runs. Our poodles get to go for supervised romps around the ranch and boy do they love it! We get lots of exercise going from "The Dog House", where we live with our poodles and our boarding gang, to "The Tavern" up the hill where we do grooming, hyperbaric treatments, puppy interviews, and nutritional consults.
|
| We have our own "show ring" where we practice for our big days coming up when we do a little showin’ off at the dog shows. I'll tell you it's lots of fun and never a dull moment.
Springtime is the time when we all come back to life after our winter hibernation. We can enjoy the great outdoors once again. This issue of Poodle Times is devoted to being active with your poodle. I always try to gear my spring and summer activities into activities I can enjoy with my family, including my poodles and believe me, we have lots of fun. A simple walk around the neighborhood is great for all participants but if one wants to get even more involved there are many relatively new structured activities that our canine pals can participate in. Some involve us as spectators and other activities, which both the poodle and their favorite human can do together.
In this issue of Poodle Times, I will cover some of these activities. Of course, there are many more adventures that one can explore and enjoy with their poodle, which I’ll cover in future newsletters.
Whatever activity you choose, I think you’ll find that you are rewarded in ways you may not have expected, as the poodles are always surprising me with what they teach me.
Have a great Spring and we hope to see you soon in PoodleTown at Admiration Ranch.
Love,
Jacki Panzik

Admiration Ranch - 5-acres of Poodle Paradise

46% of canines are dying of cancer these days. Drinking Kangen water causes the body to be alkaline where cancer cannot live. Kangen water is also a very strong anti-oxident, keeping inflamation (the start of chronic disease) in check.
A Nice Place in General - Admiration Ranch is 5 acres of mother nature, designed specifically for poodles. The air is clean, and the environment is conducive for a pleasant home away from home. www.admirationranch.com

Rally Obedience
Rally is an AKC titling event which is held on weekends throughout the area. A spayed/neutered poodle may compete in Rally events. Poodles can have any style of haircut in these events so no fancy, hard-to-manage grooming is required. Working toward a Rally title is mentally stimulating, fun and challenging for your poodle. Poodles have to think, focus and learn to have a good grasp on communication skills when they learn Rally Obedience. This means your Poodle will be a more "balanced" dog as he or she will be able to understand when you are conveying thoughts and requests. Poodles learn to behave themselves in public and around other dogs. Events are held at very pretty places that are fun to go to.
I find it very exciting to watch from the sidelines while my poodles strut their stuff in the ring. Poodles are very good at performing and many times will place in the top scores of the day. That means ribbons and trophies and acalades! The poodles know when they win and are very proud of themselves for doing so. This builds self esteem and confidence. For example Deja got a perfect 100 score the first time she competed. We were very proud and so was she. (Deja is pictured to the right, at the Rally in Long Beach).

Stevi earning her Rally “Novice” title (she got 1st place!)
How Rally works:
The dog and handler team move continuously through a rally course of 10-20 instruction signs with the dog at the handler's left side. At each numbered sign they perform the indicated exercise then move to the next sign. Unlimited communication is encouraged - the handler can talk to the dog and give multiple commands and signals.
Scoring is less rigorous than traditional obedience. Additionally, spayed or neutered dogs may participate in Rally!
If you think Rally would be something your poodle would enjoy give us a call and we'll talk about what it takes to be a Rally Poodle Star!
|

These 3 pictures were taken as Deja and Tracy earned a “100%” score and ribbon. This was extra special because it was at Poodle Club of America’s Regional Show.

Participating at UKC Shows is lots of fun,
and you don’t have to have your poodles in “those silly-looking hair cuts”
Established in 1898, the United Kennel Club is the largest all-breed performance-dog registry in the world, registering dogs from all 50 states and 25 foreign countries. More than 60 percent of its 13,000 annually licensed events are tests of hunting ability, training and instinct. UKC prides itself on its family-oriented, friendly, educational events. The UKC has supported the “Total Dog” philosophy through its events and programs for over a century. As a departure from registries that place emphasis on a dog’s looks, UKC events are designed for dogs that look and perform equally well.
|

Dog shows are social events to be shared by friends
|
United Kennel Club offers a Limited Privilege program. The Limited Privilege is open to all dogs that are spayed/neutered. This includes mixed breed dogs, purebred dogs of unknown pedigree, and purebred dogs with disqualifying faults as described in the UKC breed standards. The programs open to Limited Privilege dogs are Obedience Trials, Weight Pulls, Agility Trials, Total Junior Program and Dog Sports (including Family Obedience). The point is that anyone who is motivated can participate. There’s something for everyone.
The UKC shows are much less formal than the AKC shows. It is required that the handler showing the dog is not a professional. There are breeds of dogs at these shows that I have not seen before. The poodles love the experience of being outdoors and seeing other dogs and being in an active environment. More shows are being held in our Southern California area and all over the US each year. You can find out more about these fun events at www.ukcdogs.com. We plan to participate in an upcoming UKC show in May of this year. Hope to see you there!

HEALTHY POODLES = HEALTHY PEOPLE
Health Tip
With summer vacations come summer stays at boarding facilities. At PoodleTown we use Homeopathic Nosodes for Bordetella aka “Kennel Cough” prevention. By putting 3-5 drops of the Bordetella Nosode in the drinking water, dogs can have defense against ALL strains of Bordetella. The number of strains of Bordetella are many, some say 20+. The number of strains the Bordetella vaccine “protects” against are few - around 7. I have encountered many stories of dogs that were vaccinated with the intranasal Bordetella who got nasal cancer later in life.
Bordetella is not fatal providing the dog gets proper care and is not exposed to cold and wetness for prolonged periods of time. Keeping dogs warm and hydrated are key. Bordetella is an inflamation of the trachea. Dogs that are under stress are more susceptible. The illness usually lasts between 3 to 14 days. Dogs will continue to eat, drink and be active. Folks worry because the coughing a dog does can be dramatic making one think the dog is deathly ill. Cough syrup from your Health Food Store given at a child’s dosage amount will help with the cough.
Keeping your poodle’s immune system boosted with proper nutrition and supplementation and the aid of nosodes is the best defense against Bordetella and other diseases.
